  1. Cream together the shortening, sugar, vanilla and egg. Then add the flour, baking powder and salt. Spread in a buttered 8: square pan. Mix 4 cups berries (orchoice of fruit) cut up with 1 cup sugar and bring to a boil. Pour this carefully over the batter. (Do the fruit first) Bake at 350 approximately 45 minutes until lightly brown. Sprinkle a little sugar on top.
